Musicians, music appreciators, and night life junkies, here is your weekly guide to the Columbus music scene. Whether you’ve got a rock n’ roll heart or a craving for heavy EDM drops, there is something for you. Check out what Columbus has to offer you this weekend.

ELECTRONIC/DUBSTEP

I know there are some XX, Crystal Method, and Pretty Lights fans out there. If that happens to be you, then I’d assume you’ll want to see Ratatat at the LC Pavillion this Friday. They will play an instrumental set of funky, electronic music orchestrated by just the two members Evan Mast and Mike Stroud. Their sound involves unusual distortions thrown on a guitar accompanied by synthesizers. Be sure to catch the Soundoff next door at the A&R Bar afterwards as well.

Still hungry for more? Check out Skully’s Saturday night for DJ Giovanny. Make sure to get there early because there will be no cover charge from 10:00 to 10:30 PM. Get in there and have a good time listening to Giovanny’s set late into the night.

ROCK

Rock n’ Roll ain’t noise pollution when you live in Columbus. Friday night there are several shows you should check out depending on how much cream you take in your coffee. First off, Coal Fried Bicycle will be playing with Yellow Paper Planes and Hollinger at Brothers Drake Meadery & Bar. Yellow Paper Planes will be playing harmony oriented, uplifting rock songs off their newest album Feather’s Touch. Coal Fried Bicycle has an arrangement of quirky, original Christmas songs along with some assorted rock and folky songs as well. Also on Friday, Stubborn Clyde will be playing with the Don Argento Band at King Avenue Five. These are two rockin’, local bands that you should come and support. These bands have their roots in all kinds of rock, especially classic rock. Any fans of the 70’s will be hearing some familiar sounds. To add to Friday’s options, Friendly Faux will be playing Happy Tooth and Dug, Gelatinus Cube, and The Worn Flints for the D.P. Love show at Skully’s. This show features a wide variety of sounds. The Worn Flints sound like Tame Impala crossed with blues and folk music. In contrast, Friendly Faux will be playing some not-so-friendly music, sounding like Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots. Last on the list of Friday rock shows is Red Line Tragedy with PLVNET, and Lotus Crush at O’Shecky’s Live Bar & Restaurant. Lotus Crush sounds like The Cult with a touch of today’s metal scene thrown in there. PLVNET will be playing their single “Street Lights” which is a mix of Indie music morphed into rock music. Red Line Tragedy comes to the stage sounding like Seether with heavy guitar riffs and post-grunge era vocals.

Moving on to Saturday, Seven For Eden will be playing with Crushing Gravity and It Dies With Me at O’Shecky’s Live Bar and Restaurant. Here’s how it is; If you like Metallica, you’re going. These bands thrash with the best of them.

On Sunday, there is another heavy show. This one is all death metal at Ace of Cups with Toxic Holocaust, Lord Dying, and Infernal Death. the hardcore, heavy, heavy metal fans out there, you will enjoy this show. Also on Sunday, check out ROCKPOCKALYPSE III at King Avenue Five.

RAP/REGGAE

Friday night come check out the Jocef Michael Band at The Basement with Plaid Brixx, Beyond Pluto, and more. This show is less rap and more R&B especially considering the openers are more of alt rock bands than rap groups. However, this night offers a variety of music capped off with Jocef Michael and his band playing some music sounding like some supped up Usher tracks played with a live band.

Saturday get to Skully’s early for the WHO’S HOT BATTLEGROUNDS. Anyone who has ever watched a rap battle or been a part of on knows that they are intense and entertaining. Don’t miss these local rappers going at it this Saturday.

COUNTRY

For the country fans in the greater Columbus area it is your lucky weekend. There is a two day festival of nothing but some good, old-fashioned country music. It’s the WCOL Country Jam Fest FEATURING Eric Church at Historic Legend Valley Concert Center and Campgrounds at Buckeye Lake. Friday features Thomas Rhett, Raelynn, Joe Nichols, and Joe Diffie. Diffie really hits that genuine southern sweet spot with his swinging, harmonica backed songs. Nichols follows suit with the more “radio-friendly” country you hear today. Raelynn sings her songs with a passion about being young and in love. She features catchy hooks and choruses with words you can sing along to. Rhett will likely be playing songs off his brand new album Vacation. It was released August 28th, so you can be sure he will be in high spirits to be playing some new material for the crowd.

Saturday the Festival carries on with Eric Church, Mark Chestnutt, The Cadillac Three, Love and Theft, Big and Rich, and Aaron Lewis. Aaron Lewis, the lead singer from Staind will be playing some somber country music reminiscent of his musical style with Staind. Big and Rich will be playing some more fun and playful music. Love and Theft will be performing tunes like “Can’t Stop Smiling” all about cherishing those feelings we all live to experience. The Cadillac Three are going to sing about partying in the south and being proud of it, so get ready for some heavy and involved country music. Chestnutt will be a throwback to a more classical country sound. The last act of the weekend will be Eric Church performing on his world tour. As a country music fan you cannot miss this concert!
