ROCK

Barbed Wire Dolls

Check out the Barbed Wire Dolls’ playing their hard core punk.

Patrick Sweany Band

Patrick Sweany bustin’ out a solo.

Friday is kickin’ off the weekend with some in your face metal punk, blues, and summertime funk. Barbed Wire Dolls are playing the Ace of Cups with Betty Machete and The Whiteouts. This night is gears up towards the Barbed Wire Dolls’ headlining act which is reminiscent of the Misfits angry attitude. Patrick Sweany and his band are holding their album release party with Lilly Hiatt at Rumba Café. This will undoubtedly be a good show to catch. The Patrick Sweany Band plays some suave blues rock, and Lilly Hiatt is the daughter of an accomplished songwriter ensuring some high quality music. The Pimps of Joytime and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong are throwing in back with some summertime vibes at the Park Street Tavern. Be ready to get funky with these bands. Lastly on Friday, check out the Andy Shaw Band at Keystone Pub. These guys play some Zeppelin like rock, and who doesn’t appreciate that?

The Motel Beds

The Motel Beds live.

Saturday is another big day for rock in Columbus. Fox Valley Harvest is playing the A&R Music Bar with some music that is more country than rock. Still, they play some exciting music with a sound that is a mix of Mumford and Sons and The Kinks. In contrast, Damn the Witch Siren is having their album release at Skully’s. This band is self-described as “electronic with rock.” It’s some dark electronic rock to paraphrase. The rest of the lineup features other various styles of electronic rock as well. New Moons and Two Years Later are playing The Tree Bar. These bands take their musical flavor from Blink-182 and Sum 41. They fit safely into the turbulent mold that those bands carved out. For an introspective night, go see The Color Why? They are a psychedelic rock band, as you might have guessed, ready to ponder with an attentive audience. The Motel Beds are playing the Ace of Cups with The Kyle Sowashes and Garbage Greek. The Motel Beds bring a unique kind of garage band that sounds more like they want to have a beer and watch the sun set on the beach than incite furious head banging. They are a talented band that are worth going out of the way to check out. Another couple of artists that like to kick back are Jared Mahone and Caleb Hawley. They play some soothing rock, almost poppy, music that you would enjoy on a laid back Saturday night. See them at Brothers Drake Meadery & Bar. Any Pink Floyd simply have to go see Wish You Were Here at The Newport. These guys are the best Pink Floyd cover band around and they will be playing the entire Wish You Were Here album from start to finish. Don’t miss them! The last band on Saturday is Miss May I. These guys are full on heavy metal die hards. They thrash with the sort of technicality that larger, headlining bands do with a drummer than can keep the pace. Don’t expect any melodies over their particular brand of metal.

POP/R&B/ACOUSTIC

Ladybird and The Throwbacks are playing Brothers Drake Meadery & Bar. These bands sound like they are straight out of the 80’s with their synth backed pop music. Also on Friday is Youth Lagoon at the A&R Music Bar. Youth Lagoon is a dreamy pop band that appeals to your sensitive side. Go sway along for a low energy, pleasant concert. The Joel Walter Band is playing their soft, country toned music at The Tree Bar as well on Friday. Another relaxing night for you to come enjoy. Pick your poison.

Youth Lagoon

Youth Lagoon delivering a psychedelic performance to accompany their dream pop.

Skipping over Saturday and moving on to Sunday now. Sianna Plavin is with Time & Temperature and Jordan O’ Jordan at the Ace of Cups. This is a full bill of even more tranquil music. It’s mostly lyrically oriented with very minimal instrumentation, like daydreaming on a cloud with a company of Irish friends particularly during Sianna Plavin’s set. Also on Sunday, Trevor Hall is with Personal Public, Will Evans, and Christina Holmes. This lineup includes everything from Reggae to upbeat pop music. If you’re in the general mood for some uplifting tunes then come check this show out.

RAP

Friday there is a local rapper showcase and a costume contest to go along with it. It will be a good way to discover the local talent and have some fun dressing up for the Halloween season as well. Go check it out at Skully’s.

Kendrick Lamar, ladies and gentlemen, is going to be at the LC Pavilion this Saturday. You cannot miss this show. Kendrick came up from his Compton roots to become one of the most relevant rappers around today. His work has been described as intelligent, moving, and honest.
