Elder with Mos Generator and Brujas del Sol play the Ace of Cups on Tuesday, March 10. Doors at 8, show starts at 8:30. Cover is $10.
As winter slowly comes to an end Starwood Presents is once again offering ample opportunity for the hesher set to dust off their denim jackets and get out for some awesome metal shows in March. The mighty YOB returns to Ace of Cups on March 18 with Ecstatic Vision and Lazer/Wulf and Iron Man with Yesterdays Saints will appear at Ruby Tuesday Live on March 21st.
The show that has me most excited, however, is Elder at Ace of Cups on March 10th, in what I believe is their first Columbus appearance. There was an ill-fated house party show that was supposed to take place over the 4th of July back in 2012, but never materialized, as house party shows are known to do (still bummed I never got use that #redwhiteanddoom hashtag). This time the Capital city gets their only Ohio appearance and it looks to be a good one as they tour in support of their new album, Lore.
Their previous album, Dead Roots Stirring is one of my absolute favorite entries in the stoner rock genre in recent memory. That second album showed an understanding of both epic down-tuned riffing and melody that many bands never quite achieve throughout much longer careers.
Since then, the band has mostly toured in Europe, including an appearance at the Roadburn Festival that was documented as a live album. The band appears to be picking up some buzz after their Spires Burn/Release EP and those Euro appearances, as well as the scarce nature of their shows in the US the past couple of years.
This is the kind of show that makes my Denver friends jealous when we get it, and with the band seemingly on the rise will definitely be one not to miss for fans of all things heavy. If you still need convincing, just see what I mean and give “Dead Roots Stirring” a listen here:
BONUS: Brujas del Sol, the local psych-spacerock band opening the show, just released a brand new single on Bandcamp. Singer/guitarist Adrian Lee Zambrano tells Columbus Calling that 5 new tracks have already been recorded while several more are being written with new drummer Cody Smith (ex-Bummers). He also says there will be several physical Brujas releases as well as some touring taking place in 2015. (Chip)
