Soul Asylum with special guest Juliana Hatfield Three will be performing at The Athenaeum Theatre on Tuesday, October 22. Tickets are $35. Doors are at 6:30pm with Juliana Hatfield Three going on at 7:30pm.
I’ve often wondered if legacy bands who release new music but then only play the older hits get bored with performing the same songs live that they’ve been playing for decades. Fortunately, on this headlining jaunt across the U.S., Soul Asylum is giving songs from their recently-released 13th album, Slowly But Shirley, plenty of love in the setlist as it hits some classic Soul Asylum notes (“Freeloader,” “The Only Thing I’m Missing”) as well as introducing some groovetastic ’70s funk (“Tryin’ Man,” “Sucker Maker”). Don’t worry, you’ll still get many of the “greatest hits” songs that the band performed as the opening act on this summer’s Stone Temple Pilots tour as well but as headliner, the setlist will double in size which should satisfy fans new and old.
Don’t expect anything new from the Juliana Hatfield Three as the trio will be performing 1993’s hit album Become What You Are, which features the singles “My Sister,” “For the Birds,” and “Spin the Bottle,” in full. Having heard Hatfield play some of these songs both with a full band and as a solo performer at a Happy Hour show at Rumba Cafe, this is an opening set not to be missed.
