Those songs you just can’t stop listening to? TORRES’ “Helen in the Woods” should be under consideration. The “Goth Night at Mean Mr. Mustards” vibe (a shout out to all you former campus warriors) – throbbing rhythm, commanding vocals – is not necessarily indicative of Mackenzie Scott’s entire new album, Three Futures (4AD), but it’s one of the most startling and unique tracks in a collection of interesting and electro-pop driven songs.

In many ways, Three Futures is a companion of St. Vincent’s 2011 release, Strange Mercy, an album that had such a profound impact on Scott that she has the album title tattooed on her forearm (Annie Clark called the tattoo “rad” in a back-and-forth Twitter exchange with Scott in 2014). Evidence can be heard on a track like the wonderful single, “Skim“.

TORRES and The Dove & The Wolf play The Basement on Wednesday night. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 day of show.
