I’m one of those people who sounds like an idiot when asked to describe Torche’s sound and I fall back on something I once read, “Well, they are metal for people who don’t like metal.” And that’s pretty much totally not true – not like I’ve gone out and done focus groups with non-metal fans but my guess is if you aren’t even remotely interested in the metal genre, you’re probably not going to be like, “I don’t know that this stuff is, but I love it.”
Torche has a melodic sense and a singer that sings rather than barks or growls so it’s conceivable, I guess, that somebody who is into the heavier alt-rock stuff that, say, a band like the Foo Fighters plays once in a while might dig Torche while hating everything else found in the “Metal” section on iTunes.
But, really, Torche is a metal band and a damn good one and we’re extremely lucky that they seem to like playing in Columbus – not sure if they’ve ever skipped over us during a touring cycle. And, for that matter, singer Steve Brooks’ first band (which he’s done reunion shows with since 2010), Floor, played at Ace of Cups in April – one of just 13 shows on the band’s spring tour.
Tuesday night is not the most rocking night of the week typically but it will be this week when Torche, KEN mode and Lo Pan play at Ace of Cups. Doors are at 8, tickets are $13.
