Musicians, music appreciators, and night life junkies, here is your weekly guide to the Columbus music scene. Whether you’ve got a rock n’ roll heart or a craving for heavy EDM drops, there is something for you. Check out what Columbus has to offer you this weekend.
ELECTRONIC/DUBSTEP
Unfortunately, the shows doubled up this weekend. Nonetheless, here are your options for an electric Saturday night. Ruby Tuesday is hosting the DNB BBQ featuring Phantom 45. Phantom 45 has thrown it back to the early days of DJs and mixing tracks. His songs sound like something Fatboy Slim would play. Or get the work-week jitters out at Skully’s Kinetic Dance Party with DJs Druid Cloak, Muzzy Bear, Attak, Lethal FX, Bohno, and VJ Vendetta. Their DJs offer a wide range of styles and beats to dance to all night.
ROCK
It’s time to “party hard” this weekend. The party animal himself Andrew W.K. kicks off the weekend at The A&R Music Bar with a special solo show Friday night. If you don’t know this dude you should quickly look him up and go to this show because he brings the energy. “Party Hard” was his breakout song and you won’t forget it once you hear it. However, if that’s not your kind of rock you need to get to one of the following shows. The Imaginary Cookies will be playing the Keystone Pub. These guys sound like Bush’s slower songs, rough around the edges but still heart-warming. You can catch The Professors at the King Avenue Five, sounding like a cross between the Kinks and the Doors. Next up, The Cordial Sins jam with Automagik and By Light We Loom at Brothers Drake Meadery & Bar. This will be pop-punk sandwich served with indie rock bread with a side of Florence and the Machine. Feel free to get there early to catch a jazz show by Billy Wolfe’s Tetradectet. At the Rumba Café, Eye will be playing some psychedelic rock with Mama.
Saturday is coming at you with another diverse group of musicians. Only Flesh will be at the Ace of Cups playing music that is in line with their name, metal-punk with some Manson influence. The Cry! joins Lost Element and Foxtrot at the Rumba Café. This show is full of music that sounds like the late 90’s early 2000’s alt rock sound identifiable by bands like Weezer and the Plain White T’s. At Brothers Drake Meadery & Bar there is an indie rock show with some Billy Joel like piano work on the piano. Come see Room and Board with The Cordial Sins and Wreck Loose. Buffalo Native will hit Rumba Café. They are a jam cover band that has some southern roots.
Rock doesn’t sleep on Sundays! Checkout Hippo Campus and their new single “The Halocline” at The Basement. They have an open, soft, welcoming sound that effortlessly pulls you in. In extreme contrast, Sons of Texas joins Fit For Rivals and Dead Mans Dew at The A&R Music Bar. Dead Mans Dew draws their influence from bands like TOOL, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. Fit For Rivals is a emo-punk band on the rise with iconic, raspy vocals from their singer Renee Phoenix. Sons of Texas sounds like Pantera’s little brother with just as much hate and pounding riffs. Earlier on Sunday at Skully’s, Mac Sabbath will be playing McDonalds parodies of all your favorite Black Sabbath songs. They dress up in the costumes like McDonalds characters and deliver one unique performance.
RAP/REGGAE
Your weekend starts Friday at Skully’s for 106.7 The Wave’s Artist Showcase. Sponsored by your local rap station, this is sure to be a good night filled with live rap music and other DJs.
Then come back down to North Hight Street for The Flex Crew playing at Skully’s. They are always well-rehearsed and put on a good live show. Any fans of Bob Marley, or of any of the Marleys, should come see them play Sunday night.
