Hollywood Undead live.

Musicians, music appreciators, and night life junkies, here is your weekly guide to the Columbus music scene. Whether you’ve got a rock n’ roll heart or a craving for heavy EDM drops, there is something for you. Check out what Columbus has to offer you this weekend.

ROCK

Grace Potter

Grace Potter delivering an electric performance.

The rock scene is incredibly varied this weekend. There is everything from pop rock to heavy metal hip hop. There is, without a doubt, a show for you this weekend regardless of your taste. To start off the weekend Grace Potter hits the LC Pavilion with her electronic, pop rock. Potter’s music brings music halls to life because audiences can’t help but dance along. On the other end of the spectrum, in the old, dark rock hall, The Newport, Hollywood Undead will incite a mosh pit. These masked crusaders of gritty, heavy hip hop are true performers. Having seen them at Rock on the Range, I can vouch for their live energy. Digisaurus is headlining Skully’s playing some CD 102.5 type, pop rock. The openers, Dominique Larue and Label Me Lecter, are rap acts and you should check them out as well. The Tree Bar is hosting Tracks and Nate Farley. Tracks brings a throwback sound that sounds like if Bruce Springsteen sang for Blink-182. Then later at The Tree Bar, Born in a Bar, The Bygones, Rue Snider, and Lou Poster. This show features all types of music from sincere, lyrically oriented music to some radio-friendly pop rock. Radkey rewinds the musical timeline to the time of CBGB’s. They are a punk rock band that sounds somewhat like The Black Keys with Depeche Mode vocals. Catch them at the Rumba Café. At King Avenue Five The Nephews are playing some spacey, indie music that will induce deep, tranquil thought.

Dawn Drapes kick off Sunday with Brave Weather at Ruby Tuesday. Brave Weather opens with tempo changing indie rock that swings from intense and fast to a slow crawl. Dawn Drapes is a band that is unafraid to be originally cool. They play smooth, soothing rock. At the Ace of Cups, Cursive, Whitney, Leggy, and The Wind and the Sea, however contradictory it may seem, are putting on a heavy metal indie show. Head over to the Rumba Café to see The Lighthouse and the Whaler promote their new album Mont Royal with their 1975-esque music. Then stick around for the late show at Rumba Café to see some funky blues from the Hoodoo Soul Band.

COUNTRY

Check out the late show Friday night at the Rumba Café. Luke Kaufman is telling his comedic country stories with an original twist. He has created both country rap songs and more standard country boy anthems, but he does it all with his own spin and humor. Also on Friday, Chris Cagle is playing The Bluestone. He plays the kind of country you hear on the charts today, so fans of modern country music should check that show out.

On the bill for Saturday is Corb Lund & The Hurtin’ Albertans with The Ohio Weather Band. The Ohio Weather Band opens the night with slow melancholy songs that feel as though the singer is wandering through life looking for answers. Then the night is capped off by Corb Lund and his gang with some fun country music with bluegrass undertones. Honey and Blue are playing their heartfelt, country-tinted, acoustic music. This duo creates a truly romantic vibe.

RAP

Shamir kicks off the weekend at The Basement. Shamir comes to Columbus with an original sound of house music combined with rap. The combination of the two makes for some contagious dance music. You won’t be able to help but move along to the beat.

Then Sunday come see Mac Miller at the LC Pavilion. He is an artist that needs little introduction these days. He blew up after being a punk high school kid dedicated to his craft. Today he features fresh, old school beats that stay away from the main-stream Fetty Wap sound.
