There’s a reason Leah Marlene made it to the top 3 on last season’s American Idol – not only did she demonstrate vocal abilities worthy of a record deal but her effervescent personality, from first audition to last performance, was infectious. Of course, for a guy my age, it was thrilling to learn that her dad, Derry Grehan, is the lead guitarist of Canadian AOR band Honeymoon Suite (“New Girl Now,” “Feel it Again”).
Though American Idol follows a certain narrative (kid who doesn’t know they have talent is plucked off the street and given the chance to become a superstar), Leah had already released two albums before ever appearing in front of Lionel, Katy and Luke. It’s from these albums, as well as an upcoming third one, that Leah will draw from when she performs at Rumba Cafe on Sunday evening. This is an early show, sponsored by WCBE, starting at 6pm which means you can make it home in time to catch the show that put Leah in the spotlight last year. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here or at the door, as long as it doesn’t sell out in advance.
