Promowest Fest 2016: Day One

So the first day of the inaugural Promowest Fest is in the books. We’ll do a full recap of festival thoughts and highlights after the weekend is over, but for now, just a few quick thoughts. Ryan Adams and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds would have been one of my “can’t miss”shows of the summer on it’s own, and seeing them at the festival last night did not disappoint. Singing along to Oasis tunes as the sun hung low in the summer sky is one of those moments festivals wish they could advertise, put in on a postcard and...

Promowest Fest 2016: Show Up Early (or Late) and Catch These Bands

The inaugural edition of Promowest Fest is finally almost here. And while the first installment of this three day music festivals boasts impressive top line names such as Noel Gallagher, Ryan Adams, Snoop Dogg, Brand New and Modest Mouse, part of the fun of any music festival experience is checking out new artists. Sure they might play earlier in the day, but they normally play on smaller stages where it’s less crowded and there’s more room to dance and easier to get close to the stage. So while you’re catching big acts like Garbage, don’t forget to seek out some...

Sunday: In the Whale at the Shrunken Head

Are you a fan of Sunday night rock shows? Sure, they give you a little extra time to get ready for the show, but boy do those late nights suck come Monday morning. Well The Shrunken Head is helping you get your rock fix this Sunday night with an early show by In the Whale.  This two piece hails from Denver, CO and they play a high energy, thick style of rock n roll that is heavy on the fun, but not heavy on the agro. Their video for Heels had me instantly intrigued and the early set time (7:00 doors/8:00 show) and $3 cover price will either have me attending or regretting it immensely come Monday morning. Shout out to Brad Keefe for telling me to check these guys out and now I’m telling you to do the same....

Show Preview: Corrosion of Conformity at Park Street Saloon

Saturday night should be a rocking one in the Capital City. The rain will relent, temperatures will rise into the 70’s once again. The stage will be set for a good night out in the Arena District, and the return of Corrosion of Conformity with vocalist/guitarist Pepper Keenan at Park Street Saloon. Pepper hasn’t toured with COC in many years, choosing to focus his efforts on the Phil Anselmo led supergroup Down while his other bandmates continued to tour and record under the COC name as a power trio. Perhaps it was Down frontman Phil Anselmo’s recent troubles that prompted...

The Hateful Eight 70mm Roadshow Opens This Weekend At Gateway Film Center

For those who have yet to see the latest film from Quentin Tarantino, or those who were simply miffed that the limited Roadshow engagements skipped Columbus in favor of Cleveland for it’s Christmas Day opening, rejoice, Gateway Film Center is bringing the 70mm version of the movie to Columbus at last! For those unfamiliar, the Roadshow version of Writer/Director Quentin Tarantino’s latest opus is a special cut of the film that contains additional extended scenes, an overture, an old school style intermission, AND it’s presented not digitally, but on “glorious 70mm.” These special screenings are a huge “get” for Columbus after being passed up on the initial run a few weeks ago and no doubt represent some very hard work on the part of Gateway Film Center to make it happen. Tarantino has indicated that this cut of the movie is specifically designed for the widescreen theatrical experience, meaning it’s unlikely we’ll see a DVD/blu-ray of this version of the film for some time, if at all. On a personal level, I’m pretty excited to experience a film in 70mm for the first time, as it’s rare to see movies shown on actual prints these days, much less 70mm, which requires a special projector and equipment. And the allure of a special cut of a major film that can’t be seen elsewhere should be enough to keep you...
