FRIDAY SHOWS (6TH)

Albert Hammond Jr.

As one of the members of The Strokes, you already know that this is going to be a great show. He is the son of Albert Hammond who is also a successful musician. You can hear that familiar Strokes vibe shine through Hammond Jr.’s music. Rock fans are all but required to make it to this show to see a talented member of an iconic group in an intimate setting at The Basement.

Details:

Doors: 7:00 PM @ The Basement – 391 Neil Ave, Columbus, OH 43215

Robert DeLong

Robert DeLong in on his way up in the pop circuit. His particular brand of electronic music made him a radio hit with the song “Long Way Down” off the album In The Cards. Take the opportunity to see him in the intimate setting of the A&R Music Bar before he graduates to the next level because it’s certainly “in the cards for him.”

Details: 8:00 PM @ A&R Music Bar – 391 Neil Avenue, Columbus OH 43215

Local Artist Showcase

Skully’s wants you to get to know a few local artists Friday night. Headlining the event is V!bes. V!bes is a band that has that summertime feel with their reggae rock style. They are comparable to Sublime in terms of their sound. They do a good job of alternating between singing and rapping over their riffs, making their music more versatile and interesting to listen to.

Starts: 9:00 PM @ Skully’s – 115 N High St, Columbus, OH 43201

The Story Changes, Daymare, Sunday Afternoon

This lineup features a darker sound from the shows listed above. The Story Changes is a melodically oriented light core metal band. They open their song “Tidal Wave” with a piano intro. That is a testament to their musicality. They can shred and still be digestible to an unseasoned ear. These guys also throw in some tempo changes in their music which only further proves their proficiency. Daymare plays slower music than The Story Changes. They sound more like a more comatose version of Dinosaur Jr. I hate to use the word comatose though because that their music is engaging; it’s just played at a slower tempo. Sunday Afternoon has some Pearl Jam sound to them. They are able to take a song from slow and harmonious to fast and loud. This lineup will have you engaged all night. I highly recommend it to and rockers out there.

Andy Shaw Band

The Andy Shaw Band is an interesting group. I find their sound hard to describe with just one genre or style. They are clearly a band with their roots in rock, but throughout their set list you can hear elements of reggae and some accents of country peek through. That said, these guys are a solid band. Come see these regulars jam at the Keystone Pub this Friday.

SATURDAY SHOWS (7TH)

David Mayfield

Mayfield tearing it up on his guitar.

David Mayfield and Sean McConnell

This is the one Saturday show I really wanted to highlight. That is because these guys play some refreshing country and folk style music. It is not the kind of pop country that you hear on the radio. These guys break from the formula and play country music that walks right out of the blues. They have a relatable and down to earth approach. It is difficult to properly describe the uniqueness of these guys’ sounds. I recommend that everyone go see this show because it will be unlike any other you will see.

SUNDAY SHOWS (8TH)

The Features

Another unique sounding band that you can safely expect to see growing into their full potential in the next few years. I’ve seen them described as a psychedelic band, but I don’t necessarily hear them that way. They do have that electronic element to them that can be psychedelic. Still, I see them more as a indie rock band with an electric fuzz that coats their sound. Definitely check them out because they are a band on the rise.

Little Hurricane

Little Hurricane playing to a big crowd.

Little Hurricane

Here is a duo that can play bigger than they should be able to. Their music, at first listen, does not sound like the work of only two people. I compare that rare chemistry and skill to the likes of Royal Blood, another band that plays bigger than their lineup. Little Hurricane flies unfortunately under the radar relative to their quality and purity of sound. I’d compare their sound to being a cousin of The White Stripes.

Hoodoo Soul Band

If you want some funky soul music to groove to on a Sunday night then you have to check out Hoodoo Soul Band at Rumba Café. They are a bunch of veteran musicians who play some fun jams. They create a loose and fun environment when they get up on stage. It’s a perfect way to end your weekend if funk, jazz, blues, or soul music is your brand of entertainment.
