twenty one pilots

Twenty One Pilots is playing the Schott this Friday.

Musicians, music appreciators, and night life junkies, here is your weekly guide to the Columbus music scene. Whether you’ve got a rock n’ roll heart or a craving for heavy EDM drops, there is something for you. Check out what Columbus has to offer you this weekend.

ROCK

echo

Echosmith will be joining Twenty One Pilots for their blowout stadium show.

Here are the bands in town to help us party it down this weekend. Friday night there is a pop-rock powerhouse stadium show at the Schottenstein Center. Twenty One Pilots hits their hometown with Echosmith and Finish Ticket. These bands need little introduction. If you listen to any radio station playing today’s Top 40 then you have heard these bands’ songs. While they are Top 40, I would not categorize them that way. These bands feature a full spectrum of sound with rock roots holding them together. For a smaller, funk and blues-based show, check out the LC Pavilion to see The Frank Harrison Group. These guys like to throw it back to the old greats of all that is blues and rock n’ roll. Some of their influences include Hendrix and Jeff Beck. Scaling down again, Clay Otter is playing at Ruby Tuesday with The Color Why¸ Coya Hill, and  E.A.D. Clay Otter seems experimental because their sound ranges from smooth electric riffs to heavier distortion with screaming vocals. Fans of Nirvana and the Strokes should go see what they’re about. Diane Coffee, Swarming Branch, and Kate Tucker are playing the Rumba Café. Tucker opens the night with some gentle, melancholy songs with country undertones. Swarming Branch follows up with some original Exile on Mainstreet Stonesy rock n’ roll. Then Diane Coffee closes out the night with some gospel-infused rock music. Something like you would expect to hear from Foxy Shazam. Too add to the plethora of Friday shows, Near Earth Objects is playing at the Brothers Drake Meadery and Bar with Betsy Ross and The Worn Flints. Betsy Ross plays some White Stripes type rock while Near Earth Objects and The Worn Flints take more after bands like Pavement and Modest Mouse. For some heavier rock, head to O’Sheckys Live Bar and Restaurant to see Wayland with Bareknuckle Bullseye, 8LB Pressure, Triad Eternal and One Pretty Minute. This is a heavy show with everything from Disturbed like riffs to Wayland’s country metal. The last of the Friday shows is Jeff German and the Blankety Blanks at the King Avenue Five.

Don’t miss Death Cab For Cutie this Saturday at the LC.

Saturday features some solid options as well. One of America’s favorite indie rock bands, Death Cab For Cutie, is playing the LC Pavilion with Twin Shadow all presented by your local radio station CD 102.5. Twin Shadow got his start writing dance music before moving on to the harmony driven pop he creates today. Death Cab For Cutie is widely known as one of the most successful indie rock bands. If that is your type of music at all don’t miss the chance to see them live. The Village Bicycle plays The Tree Bar this Saturday. They sound like Alanis Morissette’s  Jagged Little Pill with a more pleasant, dreamy accent to it. The Adam Jacobs Band, presented by Music Now Special Events, is playing at Ruby Tuesday. Their folk-rock sound is akin to what you would expect to hear sitting in a pub or tavern on a cloudy Sunday afternoon. Small Town Titans just released their hard-hitting, new single “We Owe You The Truth” this past July and are excited to share it with you at O’Sheckys Live Bar and Restaurant. Their music pays tribute to the hard rockers and grunge superstars of past decades. Continuing on with the indie rock trend, Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes are playing with The High Definitions at Brothers Drake Meadery and Bar. Ellsworth and his band play everything from melody based tunes to groove and percussion driven jams. Dead Man’s Dew and Citizens Brigade are rocking out at King Avenue Five. These bands take after the original heavy metal bands like Sabbath but don’t limit themselves to playing exclusively deep, dark, and heavy music. If you like Zeppelin then check out The Chad Schneider Band at the Keystone Pub. Schneider knows what rock is about at its core and plays like he means it.

COUNTRY

Country music has returned to Columbus this weekend. The Tree Bar is hosting Chris Laster, Lou Fran, and Alyssa Combs. Laster plays music that you would expect to hear throughout and at the end of a sad Western. Every song features a harmonica swinging over the beat. Your other Friday option is Jeff German & The Blankety Blanks at King Avenue Five. These guys play some up-tempo, feel-good country music. It’s exactly the kind of music you want to be around for a night of dancing.

Finish your weekend off on Sunday at The Bluestone with Frankie Ballard. Be ready for a well-deserved hangover on Monday because Ballard loves to sing about being “Young and Crazy” and the healing powers of “Sunshine and Whiskey” and love. You won’t even be sorry for the headache. You’ll just wish you could relive the night all over again.

ELECTRONIC/DUBSTEP

Friday get down to the Park Street Tavern to see The Wet Bandits play their set. They play all your favorite rock hits from the last 30-40 years. It’s a guarantee that you will be singing along at some point during the night.

A live show outside at the Park Street Tavern

Then Saturday be a part of the EDM Dance Party at Skully’s featuring Mat Zo and B-Funk. The EDM fans out there would recognize Mat Zo’s song “Easy” because he worked on it with Porter Robinson. Be ready for some funky EDM beats to vibe to late into the night.
